How to Make Your Home Feel Cozy in the Winter

Without cluttering your home

As winter approaches and the weather outside gets colder, you may be looking for ways to create a warm, and cozy home. When it’s so cold outside the last thing you want is for your interior to feel the same as the frigid exterior.

These cozy ideas will help you create a warm and cozy home in the cold winter.

Here are several simple and efficient ways to keep your home feeling cozy throughout the winter. You can utilize color, lighting, materiality, pillows, and blankets to create a warm and cozy atmosphere for your home in the winter.

Pillows + Blankets

It never goes wrong to add a bunch of pillows and blankets to the space: laying on the couch, propped up on the bed, or draped over the barstool counter.

The presence of comfy pillows and blankets creates the ambiance of coziness for obvious reasons. They also serve a very functional purpose. Anytime you wish you can jump in and snuggle into an oversized blanket or rest your head on a fluffy pillow. This is especially inviting if it’s cold outside and having a blanket around is always a good idea.

Lighting

How you light a space greatly affects how the space is perceived.

Lightbulbs come on a scale from about 2000 K to 9000 K (for more information on this you can check out this article: https://www.tcpi.com/what-is-lighting-color-temperature/)

Basically, the higher the number the more blue light is emitted. This blue light is good for certain types of lighting but it can also make the room feel harsh and cold. To maintain a nice, cozy room in the winter, the lighting from the bulbs should remain below 4000 K.

Notice the drastic difference that the type and color of lighting makes

Usually, the more efficient LED bulbs have a cooler, bluer color, but I found an LED smart bulb that’s energy efficient and can also achieve warm, cozy colors below 4000K. It can vary in color so you can change the light based on the time of year.

This is the one I have and I love it. It can change colors from warm to cool, is simple to use, and can be easily controlled by the app.

A beautiful way of utilizing warm lights is hanging string lights around the room. There are great options on Amazon that achieve this warm color and can be hung up around the room. It will provide some much-needed warm light in the cold, dark winter months.

Color Scheme

What colors you choose have a significant effect on the space. To keep your house feeling warm and cozy in the winter, it can be helpful to change your room’s color scheme to a warmer color: orange, yellow, and brown/tan colors will help warm up the space.

It can be as simple as an extra pop of color in the form of pillows and blankets, or as intense as new rugs, drapes, and accessories.

Materiality

The materials around you greatly influence how the space is perceived.

Wood will have a nice warm, grounding effect whereas bare concrete can give off a harsh and cold vibe.

If your small space already has materials that aren’t particularly warm or cozy, you can always spruce it up with wooden accessories; a light wooden frame or decorative bowl can work to add a lot of that material warmth into the space.

Plants

Plants are always a great way to help warm up the space. In addition to the ideas listed above, a potted plant can take your cozy space the extra step.

The natural aspect of a plant is psychologically beneficial and can provide that refreshing and cozy natural feel to the space.
