It can be difficult to develop a layout for a small apartment. You have to create room for sleeping, eating, and working without feeling suffocated in one tiny room.
Whether you are arranging furniture in your tiny house or apartment or designing your own from scratch, these creative small apartment layouts will show you that living in a small space does not have to be suffocating.
Below are the examples and inspiration I found for small studio apartments and small one-bedroom apartments. Whether 200 or 400 square feet, your apartment can benefit from these efficient floorplans. This post is all about a small apartment layout.
#1 Square Studio Apartment
This small square studio apartment includes all of the necessary elements a home needs under 300 square feet. As an added benefit, the bed alcove creates separation between the sleeping area and the rest of the house. A partition can even be put up to create more privacy.
#2 Rectangular Tiny House
This rectangular tiny house might not feel so small because there is the option to go outside on the large verandah. However, there is still a lot of floor space which provides a lot of space for living and dining rooms. In addition, the door and the bathroom create a separate nook for the bed creating its own private space you can separate with a divider or even a temporary wall.
#3 Built-in Table
Although this floorplan does not provide a separate area for the bedroom, a makeshift separation using a TV and a TV stand has been put up. This splits the open room into distinct areas – the living room and the sleeping area. It also uses a built-in table/ counter space to divide the kitchen space and living room.
#4 Square One Bedroom
This one-bedroom small apartment layout contains a large kitchen with plenty of counter space while allowing a decent space for the living room. Despite guests having to walk through the bedroom to the bathroom, it would work great for entertaining as there is a large public space and the private bedroom area can be closed off.
#5 Studio Murphy Bed
A murphy bed is a great way to save space in a 300 sq ft studio apartment. It allows two rooms to exist at once – the bedroom and living room. This way you utilize the full floor space of the apartment but can also have a nice, full-size bed. Some models even come with a desk on one side.
#6 Living Room Priority
This small apartment design prioritizes the living room and entertainment space over other spaces like the kitchen and sleeping area. The kitchen is spread out along one wall to open up the space for the living room. It also contains 2 twin beds instead of one larger full bed but you could easily make that substitution obviously.
#7 TV Separation
Similar to #3 this one also uses a TV to separate the living room and bedroom space. This one, however, is more narrow so although there may be more space between the bedroom and the living room, the couch will have to be a smaller 2-seater as opposed to a bigger 3-seater.
#8 Narrow Entry
This layout eliminates the living room area completely as it is just a bedroom and kitchen in a studio apartment. Space is also saved by creating a narrow kitchen space directly across from the entry. Although there is only a sleeping area, the full-size bed could be replaced with a murphy bed which would at least provide more floor space.
#9 Student Studio Apartment
The smallest apartment on this list is just over 150 square feet. It is a studio apartment layout that is heavily catered towards a student’s lifestyle; it is just big enough for one person to sleep, study, shower, and eat. It has a small kitchenette whose counter is arranged to create an entryway into the apartment. The otherwise limited space can be filled in with smart, efficient, and movable furniture.
#10 Luxury One Bedroom
This fancy one bedroom apartment layout provides a large bedroom and a large living room. This is made possible by putting the bathroom out of the way and shrinking the counter space of the kitchen.
#11 Square Bathroom
This one-bedroom apartment layout prioritizes the living room space as the bedroom and bathroom are both condensed. Note that to shrink the space taken up by the bathroom, the shower is cut at an angle to allow for sink and toilet space next to it. This creates a small bathroom while maintaining enough space to walk around
Conclusion
There are many different ways to design a small apartment. Some are narrow, and some prioritize a public living room area over the sleeping and kitchen space. It is all very dependent on the resident and what your needs and interests are.
